Cursed by the explosive spirit of our sadly departed purple God(dess) that was Prince, Childish Gambino’s “Awaken My Love” finds the rejuvenation of George Clinton’s wordy convulsions burrowed by the modern chocolaty thickets of Thundercat’s Bass. Donald Glover outdoes himself by balancing this mushy soul with a torrid funk sound. The album’s exquisitely defined jam that gently drops you into the dark groovy symphony that is “Me and Your Mama” sets the tone for the soft electricity that is AML. I thoroughly enjoyed swaying to the starkness of this art piece. A slight reminiscence to “The Wiz” in it’s funkified nature, I couldn’t help but keep this work on replay.
